Pulling trigger on Woo2 but question

so I'm going to pull the trigger on a woo2, however I really don't have the extra money to buy the 2nd level grate. I cook a lot of burgers, steaks, and spatchcock chicken. Is gasket level a good level for cooking these at direct?  Or do you recommend cooking those items without he woo at normal grate level?

I prefer grilling raised direct on everthing unless I'm looking for a hot sear.

Thanks, and by raised direct do you just mean with the WOO in? Or the 2nd level grid on the woo that makes it about 4" over gasket level? Thanks

I don't remember the last time I cooked anything direct that wasn't at gasket level. I don't have a Woo, just three carriage bolts and a cheap Weber grid. The bolts are firmly attached to the Weber and the bolt heads just rest on the stock grid that sits on the fire ring. Been doing this for a couple of years now. Like this (raised direct, gasket level...

If you get a woo, why do you need a second grid? The woo sits on the fire ring and the stock grid sits on the top of the woo.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

"Raised direct" is generally considered to be with the grill/grid at the felt line.  If you want to cook above the felt line, then a cheap Weber grill/grid and an assortment of carriage bolts, washers and nuts will yield an acceptable alternate to the Woo-extender and D-grill.  Another alternative is the cheap Weber grill/grid and some firebricks to get you above the felt line.

Edit: I now see Carolina_Q's posting.  Look at his homemade device and simply imagine it on top of the Woo ... that will place your grill/grid above the felt line.  Michael's picture shows his homemade device in place of the Woo.

I believe the second grid would be to increase grilling capacity.

I have the woo2 with the extender.  I use the second grid to cook wings, spatchcock, pizza, etc.  I cook without the woo when I want a direct sear, mostly steaks, sometimes burgers.....
