I was in a similar situation as the OP
I started with a large and it worked out 95% of the time but I longed for an XL for those larger cooks.
I finally found a deal on an XL and now I have both.

the extra space is really nice on the XL and I do use it fairly often................
Just not near as much as I thought I would.

The large is my main go to rig.

I'm going outside the box ...

I would get a medium since it will work for 90% of your cooks.  Personally, I love that size.  Then get an 18" WSM for the occasional large cook.

I have an XL and a medium.  They are both awesome.  Medium gets most usage, but the XL gets the heavy lifting when required.  I also have a WSM which I use for corn :)

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

    Largest you can afford
    Absolutely correct.

XXL #82 out of the first 100, XLGE X 2, LBGE (gave this one to daughter 1.0) , MBGE (now in the hands of iloveagoodyoke daughter 2.0) and lots of toys

  • My dad gave me a large last Christmas. I have been able to cook everything I have needed to on it (sometimes it's a tight fit, like Travis' brisket in the aluminum pan that's about to go on). But every time I go in the store and see the XL sitting there I sigh a little like Chevvy Chase in Christmas vacation and dream of all the fun we could be having together...
