What's the best way to get your coals going?  Looftligher, charcoal chimney, blow torch? :)

A pear burner is one of the best ways.

Actually there are many methods that work, but I really wonder if your question was deeper than just how to start a fire - but instead how do you get a (bed) of coals going and the answer to that is time - irregardless how you light the lump. A nice well glowing bed of coals without flames makes for stable cooking on your egg. HTH

  • I'm just looking for a quick way to get the coals going.  The Looftlighter looks cool, but it's $70 and the propane torches are much less.  I'm just trying to figure out what other accessories I might should request for Christmas.  If it was unaminous Looftlighter then I'd probably ask for one.

the 20 dollar weedburner from harbor freight is the quickest way, 500,000 btus of big flame

but this is the cheapest and most practical. its even faster if you light a second piece on top

I like this.  I've placed some napkins in a zip-lock bag with some vegetable oil. I'll give this a shot!

if this is your first egg, make sure to take the daisy wheel off the egg. leaving the daisy just open is not enough

It depends on how much you want to spend over the lifetime of your egg.  I have chosen a chimney ($14.00) and all of the newspaper ads that come in the mail seemingly every day - so there is no shortage. Occasionally a bacon grease soaked paper towels under the "left-overs".

1/2 chimney for low-slow dumped in the center of the XL then cover and fill the firebox adding smoking chips throughout.
    full chimney for everything else.

I've tried oil and napkin, starter cubes, electric heat element, butane torch, and weed burner.

Weed burner is my go to 100% percent of the time

Weed burner, then a BBQ Dragon for me.  500F in 5 minutes, then north of 700F in another minute or two when you get above the charcoal's auto-ignition point.
  • paper napkin, drizzle lightly with cooking oil, twist it, light both ends, nestle it into the lump with some bridging it, and walk away.

you'll always have the stuff on hand for it, it takes less time for me to shut the dome and walk away than with anything i have tried

I do the chimney too, although i set it on the gas grill's side burner to get it going really quickly.

I got the looflighter I really like it just but careful on windy days or the type of lump you use it can really go to pop in ambers every where but I would recommend this bc only thing you ever have to worry bout is electricity just plug it in and fire away
  • I've never had trouble with mine and I'm very much a newbie of less than 20 cooks on my LBGE. I use the veggie oil and napkin trick. Leave the lid open as well as the bottom for about 10 minutes and it's usually ready to close down for 10 minutes more to get it all glowing and toasty.

I asked the same question once and  l got a picture of a lady wearing next to nothing operating a flame thrower. It was. Pretty funny..

Shake the KAB, add new lump, pull a cooking oil soaked paper towel out of jar, place towel in lump in a position to get a good fire going, light towel, go inside to prep water I am going to be cooking, go check on fire...

    Jar = large pickle jar
Oil = oil salvaged from deep frying sessions
PPTowels = towels that were previously used and collected in the jar.

All of this is an adaptation of a previous post in another thread that described doing the same with an old coffee can.

"Irregardless is a word commonly used in place of regardless or irrespective, which has caused controversy since the early twentieth century, though the word appeared in print as early as 1795. Most dictionaries list it as nonstandard or incorrect usage, and recommend that "regardless" should be used instead."

Language is an ever evolving thing.  I anticipate that in another ten years or so, the traditionalist will give up on this and it will become an accepted word.
