Trying to cut an opening...

What are the thoughts on the cutout for the top? Is it better to have the entire hinge assembly be free and clear (leaving the egg a few inches above table heighth), or should I make a cutout that will allow the egg to sit deeper in the table? Talking XL here. I'll hang up and listen.

It's all aesthetics, so whatever you prefer. I suppose there is some functionality to having it flush-mount as it would allow for easier movement of food from table to grill. Personally, that doesn't matter.

It's going to get tricky if you set it flush to the table. The top of the egg drops a lot at it goes rearward when opening. The rear of the table would need a pretty large cutout. Much more than just the hinge area.

Duly noted. Thanks, fellas."Take yourself lightly, but what you do seriously." - M. Martin XL BGE - Johnston, IA

Also, if you do it completely flush, you will have a lot more heat at the table level which could cause problems.

the granite was added at his end. I don't want to pick out granite color for someone hundreds of miles away and shipping it with granite would present special problems. It could be done but local granite suppliers probably better than what I have. -
I did the notch approach too. Works great.XL, Small, Mini & Mini Max Green Egg, Shirley Fab Trailer, 6 gal and 2.5 gal Cajun Fryers, BlueStar 60" Range, 48" Lonestar Grillz Santa Maria, Alto Shaam 1200s, Gozney Dome, Gateway 55g Drum

When I read the title and first question, I thought you were going to enlarge the top vent opening and turn your XL into a tandoor
Nice setup you got there btw.canuckland
