Rain

So it is going to rain on Thanksgiving in the Chicagolad area.  I don't have a rain cap so was wondering if anyone has put a canapoy over your egg to keep things dry?  Will the heat cause my canopy to burn?  Any issues with the smoke all being traped underneith it?  Any other ideas?  Egg is not movable from back deck.
Thank you

  • I'd be more worried that the canopy would blow away if the wind came up.   Heat wise you'll be fine.  I've seen some homemade rain caps made with tin foil on here... Maybe someone will post

Costco sells rain caps for roof vents, maybe you could get some dimensions, drive down and find something ..

You'll be fine. I cooked for years in the rain before Smokeware caps

Depending on the down pour I will double up on my starter cubes to get it burning faster and wider. I also close my dome sooner than normal. My best advice is give yourself plenty of time to get up to temperature and so what if the temp is where you want it 30 minutes before you wanted it!

The canopy will not burn up. Wind can be a problem so find a way to keep it anchored to the ground.  I have had one blow onto the roof of my house. They do tend to sag and collect water so be prepared to keep dumping water.

Smoke will hang around a bit more than if the egg is in the open.  The canopy  will take on a nice smoke smell - you may want to let it air out a while before putting it away.

How heavy of a rain is expected?  Eggs do fine with the standard DFMT in light rains.
