Plate setter lifters.

I received the Smokeware Lifter a couple days ago and thought I would go out and give it a dry run. While out fiddling with it I grabbed my two other plate setter lifting tools and took some pictures.
I have a claw which only works for the large. It's the three legged device I love for the large. Keeps your hands well out of the fire. Also it keeps the PS off the ground a smudge as the PS rests on the wire legs of the tool.
I also have an Ott lifter. I also really like this device. I've had their grid lifter for a while and this followed as a trial as well. Works as advertised and you can hang the PS or cooking grid. Real nice tool.
As I said before, just got the Smokeware version. Want sure about ease of use picking the PS out of the egg. Turns out it is pretty easy. Just turn it sideways and slip it over the PS and turn back the perpendicular to the PS. Very sturdy and well built. I will update when I have a live fire later today.
Summary, all the tools work well. The claw is awesome but limited to the large. The Ott tool will lift both the PS and the cooking grid(any size). It also conveniently hangs from your table or egg mates. Pretty cool! The new Smokeware lifter is the heartiest version and lifts PS sizes M- XL. Powder coated and stay cool SS handle. I find these gadgets some of the best aftermarket tools out there.

Never saw the need. I just use my bare hands.

I virtually never move a hot PS. For the rare occasions when I do, welders gloves are fine.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Clarification. Ott lifter lifts any size cooking grid but only medium and large PS. Smokeware is the only one besides my welding gloves that picks the XL.

Thanks for the review.  I would have loved to have had your review and pics when I started ... good info all in one spot.

In it's own way, the PSWoo2 is a plate setter lifter (w/ gloves) ... love mine.

Thanks for the review; first I've heard of the Smokeware Lifter, looks nice and compact.

I really wanted to buy the Ott, but eBay used Paypal and I've bitched here before about Paypal never accepting my credit card, and not responding to my help requests for 4 years.  Well, this past week I broke the code.  Had ordered a copy of Yes' Fragile, Steven Wilson 5.1 remix on Bluray disk, and the small distributor emailed me back and said my Mastercard was rejected, his new verification system said the street address was wrong.  I live on 500 West, which is also called Ridgeline Drive.  For 19 years I've always used 500 West, but sure enough Mastercard had always used Ridgeline.  I emailed him back with the alt. address, and sure enough it went through.  Odd, I've never had that issue with any other sale over the years, just Paypal and now this guy.
Just this morning, on a hunch, I tried ordering the Ott on eBay, but used the Ridgeline address, and Paypal accepted it!  So, a four-year puzzle solved at last.

Thanks PG - you just cost me 30 bucks.  I've been using my ash tool and a hot pad...just a matter of time before I drop/burn/break something.

I need to talk to @tjv about those items. They are the Mercedes for sure. Thanks Tom

I do like all these tools. I have learned that there are many different setups and habits. I have a nest at home and love hanging my grid and PS while doing my business.

Thw lifter looks nice, but $30 just seems very steep to me.  I am thinking of getting the kick ash version of the grate lifter, I thought I had seen where people use them for PS too if you hold it over a leg.

I haven't tried that one yet. It is just like third hand and the Ott grid lifter. Not sure if it is wide enough for PS, but might be. Ott tool does both as pictured above. Good luck. They are nice tools IMO. Kick ash basket is another profound winner IMO.

Hey @stombox ... register for Smokeware's coupon codes, promotions and holiday specials on their home page.  The resulting code will drop the price down below $25.

I wouldn't send you there, but I know that Pete doesn't participate in mail order sales.

All these vendors are first rate. They will take care of you. Call or email them if you have any questions. Our experience with them has been eggcellent. If you have a local vendor you can see them in person. Sadly not many guys invest in these things. Happy egging.

Our large PSWoo will lift the entire set up out - platesetter, grid and food in one lift and as one unit.  No need to hassle with or find a place to set each individual piece.  The PSWoo will also raise the large grid to the felt line for raised grid cooks - no platesetter.   We offer stock or CI/stock PSWoo versions.  We received our patent a couple months ago on it.

  • @tjv What is the difference/benefit between the stock version and the cast iron version?  Getting ready to order. Congrats on the patent.

It is not, I just checked on my Large.
It is, however, big enough to lift the platesetter in my Small; very glad to know that!!

Any particular reason why the adjustable rig would be better?

Mi have no idea about either one, so any advice would be great

Is this new or is it just not available for the XL?  I have a Woo2/AR combo that i bought at xmas last year and it does not have handles to lift the whole unit like the photo above.

Ability to cook at different heights to increase reflective heat as needed as well as the ability to use multiple grids increasing your capacity. Search you tube for videos to see if it might be a good fit for you.
