I could walk or ride a horse to work in the morning, but I'd rather drive my modern truck and listen to the radio. Likewise I could dial in a temp with the vents and hope it holds perfect all night and get up numerous times to check it, but I'd rather use an electronic controller and not worry about it. In the end, you get the same result. It's your choice of how you got there.Aledo, Texas

But the sad thing is we have members very new to Egging who jump into buying an Egg and the first thing they want to do is buy every add on in world.
I was encouraged years ago not to buy an automatic controller as a new Egghead. I was not told "never" buy one because they are a waste of money.
It was explained to me that I should learn how to control the temps for an overnight cook. Learn how to build and light a fire for different types of cooks.
Basically I should know what to do if I walk out and my Automatic Controller is DOA...and this has happened twice over the last few years. They are not infallible. They are electronics...just like every other piece of low bid computer parts...they will break at some point...it might not happen during a cook, but you normally will not know in advance. You will start setting up the cook and notice a fan or probe not working. If you don't have spare parts you are back to manual control to cook the food you already have prepped ready to put on the Egg.
Yes, I now use them for convenience, not because it's the only way I can hold a low and slow.
I see new members post about problems holding low temps and want to buy a Guru or Flame Boss to solve their problems instead of trying to learn WHY they are having problems first. It's the "take a pill fix" you get from many doctors today because it's what most people expect and want.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas
