OT Boos Block Help
It's time to start my Christmas shopping early and would like a nice wood block. Boos has a solid reputation so I'm leaning toward that brand but others could work.
From all I've read, I want an end grain as it sounds like it's a self healing block vs long grain.
I see Ebay and Craigslist with new 18" x 24" x 2.25 maple blocks for $60-80. Is there something up? There is one local to me as a maple edge grain for $80. Are these going to be a long grain with a twist on words?
Other high quality blocks out there?
Thanks!

Looking at some of the boards have me another idea.
I have some oak trees that are down in my yard and are 30" plus in diameter. Can I cut a 4" thick slab and bring to a cabinet shop to have sanded flat? Can oak be used?Big Lake, Minnesota

Oak is going to be too porous.

I purchased a Boos, end grain walnut from cutlerlyandmore.com. 18x24x2.25 for $299. (cheapest I could find) It is beautiful and looks like it will last a lifetime. Was more expensive than maple but I don't regret.

Check craigslist and see if you can get a whole block. I found my block on craigslist for a steal.------------------------------------------------------------------------LBGE 2013 - MiniMax 2015 - Seemingly every accessory the fine folks at CGS sell - Fightin' Texas Aggie till I die - Gig 'Em - Located in the bright lights of Dallas

I got mine from a guy on etsy. They are fairly expensive depending on the size you want probably 2-$400 but his stuff doesn't look like every other board i.e. Boos, the board smith, etc. https://www.etsy.com/shop/GreenRiverWoods?section_id=7595963
