I asked the same question last week. I figured if it is half the price of other brands there is probably a good reason why.Elkhorn, NE

My cheap bone had me purchase a few bags of these in the past. I ruined a couple of meals with both. HOWEVER, it's not bad if you fill up the fire ring to the top and light it in several places. Let it burn at the desired temp for about an hour and you will be OK.XL BGE; Medium BGE; L BGE

Cowboy is the only one I had experience with. It was all I could find with out hitting many stores and a good drive since walmart didn't stock royal oak during the winter months.
I should have driven. A long distance if needed. -

Or homedepot not sure if Lowe's carries any. I don't wear panties so i don't shop there -
last winter and spring i was finding alot of unburnt pieces in cowboy that added startup time to get a clean burn. last 15 to 20 bags though have been fine, buy a bag, if your ok with it buy more. only thing i dont like about it is big pieces
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
But fish. Havent you heard? Big pieces are the hallmark of great lump. The best lump would be a single 20 pound chunk, by logical extension
awright. Nuffa that
been finding a good mix in cowboy lately. I have a small (family owned) hardware store nearby. Whenever i can, i go there to get whatever oldschool thing i need (he still sells nuts/bolts/washers singly from pull out trays), and then also buy two bags of cowboy from him. Any bit helps i think. Small town stores are suffering. I normally buy royal Oak elsewhere, but this little guy only sells cowboy or frontier. And it's been fine actually. I gave up automatically hating on it from the forum playbook.
I have come around to buying whatever is handy and cheap. It all works (for me)[social media disclaimer: irony and sarcasm may be used in some or all of user's posts; emoticon usage is intended to indicate moderately jocular social interaction; the comments toward users, their usernames, and the real people (living or dead) that they refer to are not intended to be adversarial in nature; those replying to this user are entering into a tacit agreement that they are real-life or social-media acquaintances and/or have agreed to or tacitly agreed to perpetrate occasional good-natured ribbing between and among themselves and others] -
Not my first choice for sure. Not bad if you have nothing else. I really didn't care for the smell of it or the extra rocks in the bag

what a pain it is when the local hardware closes, the one by me was so convenient. was looking for a 7/16 brass nut this week, had to ordered it online. that big piece crap must be from the metal smoker camp, makes no sense with ceramics, especially with the small and mini
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
Big chucks are overrated, I use KJ lump and consistently have to put a few pieces about the size of a large melon back, I use one large piece at a time and then break it for next use.
KJ lump is by far better than BGE for quality and the price point is also better. -
Only thing I don't like about Cowboy is it sparks like crazy when lighting with a Mapp Torch

@fishlessman That Robichaud's (Aubuchon) Hardware? damn. Even us NH folk knew that store. My local store is just like that. So I try to get what I can from him. I'll be surprised if they stay open another five years though.
Round's Hardware in Stoneham MA (for any Boston-ish locals reading this far) sells Royal Oak again. was $20 for 20 pounds last time I bought it there. Right off I-93 on Montvale Ave where it hits 28.
