Storing Cast Iron

Hey everyone - New here and LBGE owner for a month.  Got a butt, steaks, ribs all under my belt and it's great!  I've had a lot of help from friends on all of the tips and techniques for my BGE.  One sort of simple question:  I have a cast iron plate setter, grid, and small sauce bowl that I'd love to store outside on my BGE table but obviously don't want them to weather or rust (they're all properly seasoned).  Any suggestions on storing cast iron outside?  Would they keep through the winter (ohio) in a deck box inside of a plastic bag to keep moisture off?  Am i stuck keeping all of this inside somewhere?

  • I'd bring them inside.  Might be able to keep them in a cabinet inside somewhere.

    Are you planning on Egging in the winter?

    I keep all my CI inside, but I think they'd be safer from rusting in the winter rather than summer, due to the lack of humidity.

    If they do stay outside you need to remember that they'll be even more of a heat sink.

  • So far I've kept my CI Platesetter, Grid and Top Vent inside my Egg after it's 'cooled' down some.   I cook at least 1 time every 4-5 days (if not more) so I haven't given it a lot of time to be exposed.  So far, so good w/ no rust.

    Welcome, Jeff!

    I kept my CI grid on the egg for about five years straight, through Connecticut winters. It's all I used. Every so often, when I did a high heat cook, the crud (i.e seasoning) burned off exposing the rust. Slapped some oil on it and kept on cookin'.

    I keep all my CI skillets and Dutch ovens (a dozen or more) in the kitchen. I use them more there than on the egg anyway.

    I don't have a CI platesetter, but would store it inside if I did. I would NEVER store any CI in a plastic bag, inside or out.

    I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
