Casters

what size casters should I use on my table? The ones I have now are to small and hang up in the deck boards

  • Rockler has very nice casters.  I use them around my shop for many things and they will hold the weight with no problem...

Mine are HD casters from Tractor Supply I believe mine (distributed weight) is good up to 1,400#.  They were on sale at the time I was doing the mods. Feed lots etc are a good place to look, Grainger, any Big Box store and of course online. I rather buy from locals if possible.

Do not get the clear 200 lb casters from harbor freight. I thought they'd look good and they really did... until the table sat under the back porch for a month. I used 6 of them so they should have held the weight fine. I guess it was the Texas heat even though it wasn't a bad summer and it's in the shade. All 6 wheels have "flats" now and have to be replaced.

+1 on Caster City.  Biggest problem with them is they have too many options to choose from!!  I do recommend their Total-Lock Brake on whatever wheel you get.

    Total-Lock Brake:
    • Combination Wheel Brake and Swivel Lock - This brake simultaneously locks the wheel and the swivel. One step on the activating pedal instantly locks the entire caster holding the equipment firmly in place. One step on the release pedal frees the swivel and wheel.

I'd REALLY love to love this site.    Plowing thru it is like trying to get an engineering degree in Wheels.

I'm needing a set of 4x for my Egg Crate but can't get to the point of pulling the trigger on Castercity.

Also,  I'd PERSONALLY take ANY weight rating with a grain of SALT.   If a set of 4 is 'good' to 700lb (4x175) I'd DERATE it by 40% and round UP to 300lb derate for a REAL rating of 400lb.  I can't imagine THAT not being enough.   Unless your table or box is made of Poured Concrete.

Harbor Freight has some cast iron 5" castors with rubber tires that I have on my table and, since cast iron is fairly rust resistant, they're holding up surprisingly well.   And they're affordable.

The stand I bought used for my backwoods had the foam filled 8" casters and they had a bad flat spot. I got some of the 5" locking red wheels from tractor supply and they worked well. I also had the 8" solid rubber locking wheels from Barbour freight on my old large egg nest and they held up really good for several years.

Both of these are from tractor supply. The red ones are 4" and the others are 6". if your table is fairly low and the 6" high increase won't make the egg too high then it will roll really well with the 6". Casters go up in price quickly with size though. These red ones were like $60 for the set and the 6" were around $130.
