Newbie Weighing in on Rockwood Lump

I purchased my egg in May of this year and bought the ‘obligatory’ bag of BGE lump coal to have on hand for that first cook.

Not knowing any better and really not taking the time to look into anything else other than to read the countless times the topic has been raised, I have purchased two more bags since May, and have purchased the 365 Lump Coal from Whole Foods several times.

From a burn perspective, I saw no difference between the BGE and 365; I believe both lumps are made by RO.

From a size of lump perspective, both the BGE and 365 are equal. With both, I would find a random piece of wood, and in both I found rocks. I cannot tell you from which that I found these odd pieces in my firebox:

A closer look at one:

and the oddest of the two:

While I only have one firebox load and fire under my belt with the Rockwood, here are my initial thoughts:

1.     The bag appears to have larger lump than what I have seen in the other two "brands" mentioned above.

2.     There appears to be a larger ratio of large to medium size lump to small

3.     It appeared that I was able to get a fire lit and burning cleaner faster

From a cost perspective, here is what I have found:

365 Lump – $0.84 per pound (local Whole Foods price)

BGE Lump – $1.33 per pound (my BGE dealer)

Rockwood Lump – $1.44 per pound (another local BGE dealer that carries Rockwood)

If I continue to see the results with the remainder of the bag, I believe I will be purchasing Rockwood in bulk (in quantities to avoid shipping costs) to drive down the cost of the Rockwood below that of the BGE.
