OT - Homemade pizza sauce with San Marzano tomatoes from my garden

This year, we decided to grow one plant of San Marzano tomatoes.  It was our first time so we did not know what to expect.  The plant yielded 5 pounds (2.3 kg) of tomatoes despite the lack of care we gave it...  I waited all summer for the tomatoes to ripen.   This morning, most of them were ready so I decided to make a batch of pizza sauce.  I improvised the recipe but used a mix of pizza  spice from Spice Trekkers.

-5 pounds of tomatoes
-1 head of garlic
-3 tablespoons of pizza spice mix
-Juice from 1/2 lemon
-Olive oil
-1 tablespoon of salt
-1 tablespoon of sugar
-5 heads of star anis

I cut a cross pattern at the tips of the tomatoes and put them in boiling water for 15-20 seconds to make it easy to peel their skin.  I then sliced each tomatoes in 4.

I chopped the garlic and sautéed it in the olive oil with the star anise for 3 minutes.

I added the tomatoes, the spice mix, the lemon juice, the salt and the sugar.

I dialed down the heat to low and let it simmer for a few hours until I was happy with the texture. I removed the star anis heads.

Pure awesomeness!  Will do again for sure.  I usually purchase canned pizza sauce but I'll try to avoid that in the future.

Wow ! You got 5 lbs from a plant  in a pot. That's awesome.

I love san marzanos for pizza sauce. Never tried star anise in the sauce before, so I'm stealing this for sure.

Looks great. If you could can or freeze some of that and send it my way, I wouldn't complain...

@caliking I did not expect the plant to be so productive... The yield was fantastic when compared to other varieties that I've tried before.  I added some slow release fertilizer at the start of the summer and that's it.  Otherwise,  I have been really bad... did not give it much water, did not remove the suckers...  I will have a few of them next year.  The star anise is great in tomato based sauces.  I don't remember where I first tasted it but I have been adding some to my spaghetti sauce for a few years now.

@paqman - good to know. We have not had good luck with tomato growing in Houston. We used to grow 40lbs+ each year when we lived in Iowa. I keep star anise in the pantry for Indian cooking, so will definitely try it in tomato sauce.

@Botch - if you have an Indian/Pakistani grocer near you, its called "badiyan ke phool" and should be easy to find.
