How common is this?

I see that from time to time but it is usually just a small section of un-carbonized wood.  That one is pretty big and ugly...I would probably toss it rather than burn it.  It is gonna be stanky.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

    Definitely not burning it!

  • just bust it up and use it for smoking wood.  it will be less "stanky" than a piece of un(partially)carbonized wood the same size, which none of us would have  a problem with using to add some smoke

What brand of lump was this from?  I haven't seen anything like that in Rockwood.

WOW!  Rockwood uses Missouri hard woods and most of that it Oak, so I would think it should be ok to use. @stlcharcoal, what do you think?

I see one from time to time. Don't really care. If it's in my bag of lump, it gets dumped into the egg and lit with all the rest.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I think that's the first time that ever happened.  Not common.

For it to be facetious it would have to be a serious issue. Sardonic was my intent.

Damn it. I've had to use my dictionary(highlight and define function) reading your posts more than when I was a kid making the mistake of asking what a word meant. Look it up. Look it up parents and teachers would say.

I  think this is a serious issue for the OP.

Sorry about that, looks like a piece of red oak that is under-carbonized.  Probably was in a corner in the kiln or somewhere the fire just didn't quite reach it.  Usually those come out in much larger pieces--they're easy to spot since they don't break apart like the rest--so they go back in the next kiln.

Since it's still half wood, you can use it for smoking pork or something else that is good it oak.  Or throw it out if you don't want to use it.

There's always about an extra 1/2# of charcoal in every 20# bag to cover any rocks, scale error, or stuff like that.  Or you could always take it back for a refund if you're unhappy with it.

Does refund mean exchanging one piece of lump for another piece or prorating the cost of what one piece of lump costs???

@stlcharcoal it's cool man.  I was more curious what the frequency was than i was outraged at the process.

sounds like you guys already have process in place to over deliver on your promises to account for manufacturing issues

  • people (not OP) have for years been collecting rocks they've found in charcoal bags saying that when they got to 20 pounds' worth they were going to bring them all to the dealer and get a free bag of charcoal to compensate for their being ripped off.

out of curiosity i weighed a couple bags of cowboy lump and found them at 24-25 pounds.  same for a bag of RO.
