meat probes - igrill2 and thermopen

I hooked up my IGrill2 for the first time last night.  Bluetooth connection worked great.  I used the second probe in place of the normal BGE dome thermometer.  This worked great too.  FYI, I was just cooking simple chicken breasts.

Issue was this.  IGrill was reading about 140 degrees (internal chicken temp).  I decided to take a peak and get some readings with instant Thermopen.   The Thermopen temp was already at 160 in the same piece of chicken that the iGrill was showing as 145.  Ultimately, I believe the Thermopen was right because the chicken was ready.  And fyi, I did my best to get all probes the center of the breasts.  If I had used and trusted only the IGrill, the chicken would have been badly overcooked.

Have others experienced this?  Is it a temp callobration issue with IGrill2?  Recommendations?  Thanks.

  • Was the probe and the thermapen in two different parts of the chicken breast? I've had my thermapen read 20 degree differences in the same piece. I would say if it wasn't in the exact same part and depth then they both were accurate. You can always do the ice water and boiling water test to check accuracy.
