ive been at it since about 9 central time. So about 9 or so hours with a 5-6 lb butt. My thermometer is good, my temp has been 275-300 all day, but I just can't seem to get past 175 on the big parts of the butt. I had a smaller piece that was in the package that got there a couple hours ago and was good, but the main piece is still going. Should it be taking this long?

Butts do what they WANT to do. I once cooked a 2.5 lb one at the same time  as a 5 lb (same egg). The little one took just as long.

You're in the plateau... Bump temp to 350° and finish it off.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Agree with the above bump your temp to 350.  I also cheat and wrap in  aluminum foil (2 layers) to help push on  through to the finish line.

Thanks. Man this is killing me. I thought I timed it perfect for dinner. Seems like I've been at 175 for hours!!!  It's my first one so at least I know now.

The thing to remember with BBQ is its done when it's done.   I've had people over for a 6pm feeding to end up eating at 8p.  You just can not rush good BBQ.

Looking forward to to some  photos of this cook.

I had one that was done at one end, but not the other. It was late, I was starving, so I pulled half of it and left the rest on the egg. :)

That's what I just did. Half was done and the thermo slid right in and hit 190, the other half is still a bit tough and around 175. I just cut it and put the other back on. I may have a bad piece or it just may be taking longer for some reason.

    Thanks for all the advice.

I have had 5-6lb on for 12-18hrs.  As others have said, Q is done when Q is done.  If you are in a hurry, bump it up or even foil it to get it over the hump.
