Stretching a dollar

Went to the grocery store tonight looking for some ground beef to make burgers for dinner.  I'm continually shocked at the rise of beef prices...over $5/lb for 80/20 ground beef.  Right next to it was ground pork at $1.19/lb.  Thought about it and grabbed a pound of both.  After looking up some recipes, settled on a 50/50 mix of ground pork and ground beef. Added some garlic salt, Worcestershire sauce, chopped onion, salt and pepper.  Prepared as a normal burger...cooking to 160f...and it was delicious! I put some Colby Jack, onions, fresh tomato and mustard on mine.  My son wanted his later so left the cheese off.  For a net of about $3/lb these were a hit!

I've started mixing my ground beef with deer to make it go farther. It's getting a little ridiculous. Those burgers look good to me especially for the price!

That is a great looking burger!  The cost of beef is getting crazy.  I made fajitas a couple of weeks ago and I was in a hurry so I just grabbed everything without looking.  After I checked out I was wondering how I spent so much and skirt steak was like $12.99 a lb.  WTF?  For what I spent I could have just taken my family to the Mexican restaurant next door.  <end rant>

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Looks great. I've also been mixing ground pork with ground beef for my meat loafs. I usually go a 2:1 ratio

We Loveground pork at our house. We usually do straight up ground pork and put in a lipton onion soup mix packet.  We grill them up and eat them like a burger.  We talked about doing ranch packet instead too.

Honestly...It's a bit different of course.  The added spices make all the difference as opposed to s/p with the burger.  If seasoned correctly it's very enjoyable.  My son notice it was different because of the color (he's19) but had no problem whatsoever wolfing down his two lol

Gotta jump in here on this one. A local packing house here sells premade ground pork burgers in a 5 pound roll for $14. We love them as much as beef burgers. I wet them with Worch and then hit with DP Raging River. Then grill them direct at 325-350 for 4/4/2. Last 2 is to melt a slice of hot pepper jack cheese. Then on to a bun with a favorite sauce on the bottom and grilled yellow onions on top. These sandwiches rock!

Thanks @rrp I have to agree...very delicious.  And the pork at $1/lb?  Sounds too good to be true. But was actually the case!

Let's face it, the ground pork is simply trimmings from various pork cuts so yes it should be cheaper. While your $1.19 a pound was cheaper than mine which run approx $3 a pound, mine are preformed burgers, separated with paper and flash frozen. I merely take a flat bladed knife and pop off how ever many frozen burgers I'll need and return the roll to the freezer.
Once I had someone say they couldn't eat a "rich sausage burger" and I explained again these are coarsly ground, unseasoned pork burgers.

    Burgers look great!

We grind our own pork from shoulder, and beef from eye of round and sirloin, in bulk when they're on sale. I know what goes into them.  The chamber sealer makes it so much easier.
