i just got the egg yesterday was going to the first cook tonight. Do I need to calibrate the thermometer first or should it be close enough? If I need to how should I do it?

It's likely ok but best to calibrate. Put probe in boiling H2O and it should read approx 212 degrees.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga

Depends on what you're cooking really but, not a bad idea.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

Dome thermo may be all you drive the BGE with. Gotta have confidence in the info. Calibrate and enjoy the cooks.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

No need to wait for the water to actually boil if you have a reliable thermometer from ThermoWorks. Just before simmer, check it against the thermo. Easier to calculate without subtracting for elevation. If your into exactness that is. Really doesn't matter if it's close. If it's off adjust the nut on the back.
