Cast Iron Plate Setter

Options
I recently purchased on for our Large BGE. Wife wants to start baking in the Egg and before I scummed up the ceramic plate setter I replaced it with the CI.
Couple of questions, more like I just don't understand a few things. First is the seasoning aspect. I get the hit it with some oil and "bake" it in the Egg. But first time you use it legs up doesn't this destroy the seasoning? If so, this thing never actually gets seasoned, correct?
Second is cleaning it. Thing is a mess. Top side that is. I used it, legs up a few days ago and while it is clean where the flames were under it the rest of it is a disaster. Don't really want to use a wire brush on it, have seen several discussions about the hazards of this. So what do I do to clean it? The outer most ring is pretty scummed up. Half tempted to pull out the pressure washer and blast it with water, towel dry it and then toss it on the lit Egg. But this sure does seem like a lot of work lol....

Thanks in advance for any and all help....

  • I also have a CI plate setter.  The prime reason I got it (over the ceramic) was durability.  I have yet to cook on it so I really haven't worried about seasoning it nor have I cooked on it directly (I do have a nice CI skillet that I use regularly).

most of those nuisances are why i stopped using the cast iron grate =) not that i was going to clean it anyways, rust on steak disappears, rust on white fish is unappetizing. the seasoning is useless with the high heat

That's why I want a CI half moon griddle for my XL.   You could wrap it in foil and see if that helps, but if using it for pizza that may not help either,

FYI, you can clean the ceramic PS by doing a clean burn. Comes out looking like new.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I use a heavy duty stainless steel wire brush mounted to a hand drill on mine.
There is just no place for a loose piece of HD wire to hide after I'm done on the cooking surface. Takes only a few minutes.
Way less time then pampering the ceramic one and wasting time and lump on a clean burn. But everyone has their own ideas on what works best for them and should do it their way.

Good point. I use a drip pan so my ceramic ps doesn't get too dirty anyway. And of course, I don't cook on it. On the other hand, I think I've done two clean burns in 6 years. :) IIRC, RRP has never cleaned his PS.
