Anyone ever do a caveman sear on burgers?

My wife is out of town and I've been itching to do something caveman style. I have some ground deer meat and ground beef I need to use so I'm most likely going to cook some burgers on the BGE. Has anyone ever tried smoking the burgers to about medium rare and then searing directly on the coals to finish?

I've only ever seen caveman style steaks on the thread so I wasn't sure if burgers would work out as well.

Thoughts?

  • Not sure that would work well. For one thing it might be pretty tough to flip them.

    Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.

    Haven't tried that. Agree the turn might be a challenge. Still could be worth a try. Let us know

  • I dropped a burger on the coals the other nite. Cooked real fast but was good! Never cooked that way  on purpose but i think it will work.

    Can someone explain to me this new trend.  I've got an open mind to it, but just don't get it.  

    Why would you want to go right on the coals instead of a grate or CI pan?

    Because you can...

    It gives a steak (my only experience) a really nice sear crust.  It's just another option if you didn't have a CI pan.

    I agree it might turn out kinda messy!  If you are itching to try it then I would just hit the store for a rib-eye or T-bone. 

    For burgers a reverse sear will work but I would use a CI skillet for the sear.

    To be honest I tried it and I personally prefer CI.  I feel like I get a more even sear...and it is hard to melt butter on the lump.
