Going to be near St. Jude in Memphis.  Any BBQ recommendations near there?

Thinking of trying Tom's BBQ.

The closest to St. Jude is Cozy Corner, it's an un-air-conditioned hole in the wall, but its good.  Downtown, the best is Rendezvous, but go early or be prepared to wait.  In Midtown, try The Bar-B-Q Shop.

Say a silent hello to Danny Thomas. A great, great person.

I would pass on Rendezvous and go to Blues City Cafe. Better ribs.

X2 on Rendezvous. We lived there for a couple of years, and loved to go down there. Sure, other people may have their favorites, but it's hard to beat the atmosphere and history of the Rendezvous. Oh, their sausage platter ain't bad, either.

Cozy Corner for sure, and it was air-conditioned last time I was there. Known for their cornish hens.  Rendezvous for atmosphere and history but not for great bbq. Central bbq is not far and worth a visit. Not bbq related, but Gus's Fried Chicken is a must.

    Thanks for the advice.

Wound up hitting Tom's.  Kids wanted to it because they saw it on Diners, Driveins, and Dives.  This is on far side of dive.

Pretty good food.  Pulled pork was exceptional, ribs were ok - to much sauce for me, rib tips were awesome, and all sides were good.

Kids loved the bbq sphagetti, who knew?

GPS took us through some very very sketchy areas, but we survived.  Next time I will plan a better route.

No offense, but you're off-base here. Every big city has crime. Memphis is a city in serious transition for the better. Young, talented professionals are moving here for job opportunities and low cost of living. Culturally, the city is in a rennaissance with lots of museums, the Grizzlies, Redbirds, and a vibrant food scene. Want proof? 4 days ago in Huffington Post...

    From a BBQ Standpoint:
    1) BBQ shop on Madison
    2) Central BBQ
    3) Cozy Corner for rib tips

It might be changing now but I worked 13 years for a company whose headquarters was in the Memphis area and it was a rough place.
  • If my old college roommate was in town, I'd send you to him. His team places every year at Memphis in May.

Wow I can't believe no one has said the Commisary it's off the chain. But it's kind of a small place usually a line out the door even on a Tuesday. It's technically in Germantown so you don't have to worry so much about being shot, which is a serious concern.

The BBQ is great and every plate comes with deviled eggs and you have to try the banana pudding.

Next time through I will try BBQ Shop.  Toms had great food for sure, but they treated us like a nuissance.  I think the added customers from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives is not appreciated by the workers or locals.

They chatted it up with the locals, but barely tolerated us.  We were not even taking pictures or anything.  Just trying to order.
