ConvEggtor

Do I really need to buy a plate setter (ConvEggtor) or is it just one of those items that really good to own?
Smoke 'em if you got 'em!!!

First I will say I hate the new name. I will always call it a plate setter.

Right now you have a grill. If you want a smoker, or to cook any barbecue at all you need a plate setter, or the adjustable rig from ceramic grill store. If you want to cook pulled pork, ribs, brisket, or pizza, you NEED a heat deflector of some kind. The plate setter is completely worth it IMHO, and if you really get into Egging skip the plate setter and go for the adjustable rig setup from ceramic grill store.

You either buy one or the more expensive but versitile adjustable rig. If you don't have a proper means of indirect cooking, you defeat a huge portion of owning the egg. You will basically have a grill. With the indirect you also get a smoker and an oven amongst others.

The adjustable rig (multi-tiered grid) is not comparable to the platesetter (although they are not compatible on a large).  The comparable products from CGS are the spider with round stone or the oval stone in conjunction with the AR.

You don't have to have the plate setter (or 3rd party versions like spider/woo).

However, without them, you basically have a really nice grill vs an extremely versatile cooking machine.

The plate setter is what allows to cook indirect for low and slow barbecue cooks and allows for an environment conducive to baking (pizza, calzones, bread, desserts, etc)

Plate setter works well for me on both L and XL.  The other indirect options also seem popular.  They all work from what I can ascertain.  You definitely need some kind of indirect cooking set up.  Have fun!

Don't know the size of your BGE but you can make a functional indirect setup with another cooking grid (17" from weber works on the LBGE) that you can sit on the fire ring and then use fire bricks to create the deflector.  The bricks can also be used to give you a raised direct set up.  This setup lets you use your BGE for a while and sort out what you really want in the way of after-market toys without too many $$ initially invested.
BTW-welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.

Are you a new Egg owner? If so were you giving the option to get a plate setter? Also did the sales person give you any information about the egg in general. I know when I got mine first egg it was over whelming all I learned. Plus the dealer gave huge discount on parts and free stuff bought during egg purchase. If it is a recent purchase and can not swing an AR. Hit your dealer up about a plate setter discount.

I use mine probably 90% of the time or more.  It is much less common for me to cook direct w/o it.
