Curious. Any call the fire dept when you cook on the egg?

Options
just thinking. A few times when I have started cooking in the egg and its smoking real good during startup I have heard the fire signal and sirens a few moments later.  Anyone ever get called on?  When lit the egg at 4:00 am today I heard the signal a few weeks later and kept looking for the trucks.

my friend who has a another ceramic smoker was doing a clean burn one afternoon and smoke was pouring out and a police offer was driving by and walked into the yard to make sure it was not a real fire.

I asked the local fire chief about smokers one day. He said if it's going to be a LOT of smoke, just call the sheriff's dispatcher and let them know you are running the smoker. That way if they get a call, they will already know what it probably is. And if it's during a dry season drought, there better be someone close to the fire watching it if they show up on a call.

My friend of mine was grilling with his Weber kettle outside his patio on the grass of his apartment building. Next thing he knew the fire department was trying to bust down his door! His neighbor called 911. It was the last time he used his Weber. My friend says, "I guess that smoke what smells like burgers is dangerous!"

  • I can smell my Egg from down the street. How anybody could call the Fire department when they smell the food is beyond me. All my neighbors start knocking on the door when they smell the egg running lol

Not when using the egg, and it wasn't smoke, it was fire that got everyone's attention.  One afternoon, the neighbor had the dreaded cobwebs in his gas grill burners.  Unknowingly, he lit it and went inside.

Once the flames melted the knobs off the front of his grill, the hoses were the next thing to go.  The hoses ignited and started flailing around and that's when the propane regulator exploded.  By the time the firemen got there (8 blocks), the bottle was spinning around like a roman candle.  It took an extremely long time for the fire to die out.

A few feet closer to either house and it would have gotten ugly.

That is pretty much the way it is down here. I love the smell.

It is so hot here in the summer that I look forward to smelling fireplaces in the fall. It is my favorite time of year. Of course in this part of Georgia we go from hot to cold and don't really have a fall.

I live in a rural development with houses ~150-200 feet apart.  During the low and slow cook I had the neighborhood smelling great.  But during startup when its smoking good I always wonder.

I agree! I have never lived anywhere else but this part of Georgia. So when it gets down in the 20's that is cold to me!

Had a neighbor call me once wondering if I knew what was smoking on my street. I said "yes, my butt". True story.

@johnkitchens my boss, who is from the upper peninsula of Michigan says we have an "extended autumn" here in GA.

I don't think I could survive a real winter. I do business with people in Iowa and hearing the weather report from then is enough to know that I am not tough enough for it.

the problem is that mid 20 degree weather, chills you through, once it gets single digits down to say minus 40, it never feels like its colder even though the temp gage says it is but then again, sometimes the thermometer freezes up too. =)

Minus 40.... No thank you.  I'll take our 3 days below 32 for a winter here in Atlanta.  If I have to put on long pants and long sleeves every day of the week, that's too cold for me.

You know it's cold here in MN when you go outside and your nose hair freezes up and your teeth feel numb.  For how awful it sounds I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else!

@ksmyrl ... where in the UP?

Lake Superior doesn't freeze over, but about four times a century ... even then, it's not 100% frozen over.  Thus, when those *^$% cold Canadian winds cross it, they pick up moisture and moderate the deep freeze temps.  When the winds hit land, they dump the moisture and the air becomes dryer and even more comfortable.  Thus, the upper peninsula is an abnormally comfortable cold weather region.  I wear heavier cold weather clothes in Illinois than in the UP.

Stac was cold smoking bacon one day and said her lips froze to her teeth. hahahahahaha

I love the change in seasons, at least I feel myself getting older.

Couldn't imagine Christmastime in a warm climate.  Yeah, no thanks.  Also love the fact that my hobbies/interests change with the seasons.

Consistent weather would get boring pretty quickly.

Almost summer, summer, still summer and Christmas.

And on the fire dept topic, between me and my neighbor there almost always a grill/smoker going. The neighborhood would probably wonder what happened if we both went out of town at the same time.

I have to admit,I am with Fishless on this one, I moved to Ohio from Northern Maine. I feel colder here than I did up there. I could be out all day in a jackshirt and a down vest. Nothing like being outside when the trees are popping and cracking in the cold. And up there the snow is good and dry. Not like this slush we get here.

Yup. Here in the Mid-Atlantic. A wet day at 35-38 feels a hell of a lot colder than dry air in the 15-20 range. If it's 32 with slushy snow, I'm bundled up. 25 and blowing, fine crystals? I'm in a light shirt with a broom.

@ksmyrl ... the Lake Michigan side of Michigan is very pretty ... I spent my teen years just down the road in Grand Rapids.

Houghton is where I went to school.  Funny that he's from the UP and retiring in the lower peninsula.  He's kind of doing it backwards ... many folks from the lower peninsula are retiring and moving to the UP.

No problem.  I hate the cold.  Hate it.  Yes I want to move where I can decorate a palm tree with XMAS lights like in the Corona commercial.  Below 50 - I hate it.
