I need to get one of those, not the belt(nice by the way), the gasket. I haven't really had a gasket in years.

@JohnnyTarheel. Maple chicken was great with dizzy dust and pecan smoke!

So does the belt keep the fire down below from spreading up top????????
  • My understanding is that Rutland gaskets are not food safe.  See this letter. Am I missing something?

Not recommended "For surfaces that come in contact with food"

This describes my typical cook on the egg. The rutland never contacts food, let alone surfaces which contact it

it's far more dangerous to cook over charcoal and sear food and inhale carbon monoxide than to cast a sideways glance at a gasket which nevers touches the food.

Rutland does not market their gasket as food safe, an entirely reasonable position for a large corporation whi has not paid to have it tested for this purpose and realizes that they need not market it for this purpose anyway, since that's how it's already being used.

A rational human in this day and age needs to make up his mind about anything. If it makes rational sense not to use it, don't use it

had one on my egg for ten years, and only one of my kids died from it. Not bad. Still have two left

EDIT: the 'unborn fetus' aspect of that email beggars belief. First, graphite is carbon. Stay away from pencils if that's a concern. And get rid of the carbon in your system too while yer at it. Second, the fibers in fiberglass are a mechanical, not chemical, concern. If a person does not know the difference, that's their own problem

Since you lifted that letter from a long report authored by The Naked Whiz then it seems only fair that the entire report and evaluation be made available to interested parties with open minds so they can make their own informed decision. Here is that link:

    And well said.

people find what they want to in evidence ron. It was easier to pluck out the one 'negative' than to read the whole thing.

I would think if there was any real health risks by now @RRP would have discovered them from his more then a thousand satisfied customers/forum members. I'm no doctor but I think that's a large enough sample size and I've never heard once that somebody went to the doctor and the Dr. said "well, it's that damn gasket you are using on your grill causing problems again"
I raise my kids, cook and golf.  When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.
Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.
