XL BGE waiting for me next week - Advice on "Stuff" & Books!
nutshellml
Posts: 167
So I made the plunge for the XL, with just the nest and platesetter and waiting to purchase some accessories. I know there have been 100s of posts about best accessories either BGE or 3rd Party, so I won't ask that question, I'll only ask for some seasoned BGE'ers to provide the links to previous posts that helped them the most... Also, any thoughts on cook books? I've heard many good things about "Smoke it like a Pro" any thoughts? I am no means a seasoned Smoker/BBQ'er so starting at zero here...

Adam Perry Lang's books are my favorites by far. I would start with BBQ 25 for the basics and then buy Serious BBQ.1 large BGE, Spartanburg SC

As a beginning barbecuer, I was always reading, "cook till done." Well I never knew when does was, so I frequently went past it to crispy burned hockey puck. On the near universal advice of the forum I ordered a thermopen from thermoworks and now with an egg and a thermopen (or thermopop) everything turns out great. I have bought other gadgets but the egg and the instant read thermometer are the only needs.
For recipes my early favorites on the forum are abts, spatchcock chicken, carwash Mike ribs, and trex steak.

This is the book I like the best! It's available on Amazon.comKnox, PA, Medium, Mini Max, Mini, Large KJ, grandma, handcyclist, eagle watcher, always in search of good chocolate.

Ditto on the thermopen--best accessory of all! Use it for every cook.

Welcome to the group, you're go to love your XL. As far as accessories go I would highly recommend a Thermopen (I think they are on sale today). You already have the plate setter to cook indirect. IMHO that's all you need to get started, you can figure out what other stuff you want as you develop your cooking style, likes etc.
You can find all the recipes you want online, but if your looking for cookbooks, I would also reccomend anything by Adam Perry Lange.Lititz, PA – XL BGE

Don't limit yourself to BBQ oriented cook books. Almost any recipe you can prepare for the oven (and many for the stove top) can be done on the egg... breads, pie, cookies, stir fries, etc.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

I echo what @TexanOfTheNorth says, don't limit yourself to just "bbq" books and I would add avoid the official egg cookbook.

Big bob gibsons BBQ Book is the best cook book I have. I have never cooked anything out of it that was just ok , everything has been awesome. It's written by Chris Lilly who is one of the best in the biz

Skip the books and use the internet for recipes. Two good sites are nibblemethis & necessaryindulgences Chris @NibbleMeThis also has a book called The Kamado Smoker and Grill. I haven't checked it out, but its supposed to be good. Skip the BGE cookbook

As a fellow XL owner, I recommend figuring how you want to divide your firebox for small cooks. Ang-L brackets from Ceramic Grill Store, firebricks or just dividing your lump. Different preferences for different people.
For doing your small cooks, I recommend you buy a probe thermometer. When doing a 1/4 firebox of lump for say, a couple of chicken breasts or pork chops, the dome thermometer is a flat out liar. You'll want to accurately know your grid temp. Just my 2 cents.
