being an industrial engineer, we just find something that works and put it together civils would draw it out, have the area surveyed, engineer the footings, take the temp of the cement getting poured. nukes would figure it out and somehow the speed of light would be involved and if going fast enough an 8 foot bridge would fit a 12 foot wide stream it all works

Thanks for all the replies.  Lots to think about. I'm going to scout the crossing location later this week.  I will find a spot where we only need an 8' span to help cut back on material.  I'll post results later.  Thanks again.

If you have vehicular access...you can build one of these....we did one at our office works really well....here's a crude drawing but basically you can build it in your backyard and then transport it...side supports/railing can be added in the field if necessary there are several ways to mount....just pile some dirt up to whatever width & span you want then form & pour your concrete.......GL

Call the Corps of Engineers for a permit. Get an Environmental Impact Study. Call the Hydrologist. Get a surveyor to determine century flood mark. Make sure every person taking part in building the bridge is properly certified.
Or buy a pair of boots.

Not to mention everyone needs to be verified for proper US citizenship or correct immigration status/paperwork.
Today if someone is injured or killed on the job the first question is are they legal to work in the first place.

Again, thanks for all the comments...even the OT ones.  Never sure where things might lead around here.  I ended up spending $55 on lumber and we successfully built and installed a 10' long and 2' wide walking bridge.  Perfect for our need.   Here are a couple of pics.

I can't find one right now. It's well casing pipe for the span with 2x10 screwed to it with HD self tappers. 4x4 screwed down to the 2x10. Spacing is 3 1/2 "

@HeavyG - it is just an optical illusion.  They are all exactly 24" across and lined up properly.   I'm twitching right now as I type.
