They work for creating a nice look but do little to defend against Mosquitos. Some of the pricey CO2 traps work reasonably well but are expensive.  If it's for personal protection while egging, pick up a Thermacell at Walmart.  Those work great!  Also check out www.mosquito.org/traps.  No endorsement, just info.

I have two mesquite bushes out by my egg. They smell like citronella except more lemony and not as strong. Mosquitoes don't bother me as much as my wife, so I can't say how affective they are, but the do have a nice little purple flower. Just a different way to go. I can take a pic when I get home if you're interested.

Jason.....I'd like to see as I could always use something to help keep mosquitoes at bay.  Especially this time of year.

We have four around our patio and they kind of work.  They look cool more then anything.  We got our at Lowes at a good price.  BGE sells egg shaped citronella candles too.

Get some of the cutter spray and do your yard and especially bushes and small trees. This stuff works really well- need to reapply after about 3 weeks.

we've used tiki torches in the past, we have better luck with these - we fill them with the same citronella oil and hang them on hooks around our deck.  still not great at keeping the mosquitoes away, but it helps.  any wind defeats either of them.

we also have the plant Jason mentioned, its in a pot where the dogs brush against it when they walk by, smells good, no idea if it works

I used a fogger last year and it seemed to work well. I kept it under the covered part of the patio and fogged 1-2 times weekly.

I'd like the look too but if they don't do anything for the bugs I can do without them

I think they help....but i don't live in a really wooded or water area. They are really quite easy to make out of copper pipe and fittings. See attached.

I can tell you this, they don't deter carpenter bees. They're attacking my table with a vengeance.

We got one citronella plant (mosquito plant ) and it appears to be doing pretty well. I also spray Talstar - P as well , but haven't yet. I'd like to add more citronella plants so I don't have to spray chemicals.

No real mosquito issues where I'm at, but the millers will drive you crazy. When they're migrating the house has to be completely dark. It sucks if we accidentally leave the porch light on when we leave. This isn't my house, but we've experienced several scenes like this and worse when they are migrating.

I live in an area surrounded by bayou's. The mosquito's here will fly off with you. Deer flies are their devil cousins that leave massive welts.

We've found the best solutions are to try and find the standing water first, any standing water is a breeding ground. Old southern tradition is to paint the ceiling of the porch a light blue so the mosquitos think it's open sky and that they could be hunted their.  Also, you can try to make sure your lighting is away from your sitting area to draw some of the bugs off.

If that doesn't work then a heavy DEET spray is the only thing that can really do the job. It's nasty and ate the paint off some of my outdoor furniture, but it keeps the flies off.

We use fans, big ok powerful fans to blow them away from us. Works pretty well, and a breeze ain't too bad on warm humid evenings outdoors. Got the tikis too. Not for Mosquitos though.
