Building a Metal Table

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Hi folks,[p]I have had my BGE (large) for about 2 weeks now. I can see now how easy it is to get rid of my other grill. This thing cooks great. I can't say enough about it. Thanks to those who have answered my questions here recently. I'm quickly graduating from Apprentice to Novice.[p]I am an A/C mechanic by trade, so I do have some metal working skills. I have decided to build a table for my BGE. The frame out of angle iron and stainless steel for the top and the shelves. I'm using basically the same dimensions for the plans laid out on the BGE web-site for a wooden table. The only exception I have made as far as dimensions go are the width and length of the table. Mine will be 28 inches wide and 48 inches long. I plan on spraying the frame with Line X (truck spray in bed liner) and putting the entire thing on commercial type 3 to 4 inch commercial type casters. Anyone here have any suggestions on what and what not to do? Suggestions? All opinions on this are welcome.

    Green Egg Apprentice,
My only suggestion is make two and give one to me for all the help I've been. <grin> Sounds really neat. I would recommend rocking casters?[p]Ken

  • BlueSmoke,[p]Dang Man! You charge a lot for advice. You're not a tax attorney are you? [p]LOL!

    Green Egg Apprentice,
Check with the dealer on Line-X and heat. I think it catches fire easy. I have some 55 gallon drums with that sprayed on the outside. Someone set one on fire at the wash one day. It was some nasty stuff burning. Just a thought. Good luck with the project.[p]Mike

  • Car Wash Mike,[p]I checked on the heat factor mentioned. I was told it would withstand around 225 to 230 degrees F. The Egg will not be touching the table surface at all and with 3 1/2 inches of table width at the shortest edge of the table surface I think would be sufficient. What do you think?
  • Green Egg Apprentice,
Components coming out of the egg will be much hotter then 230F - A platesetter from a pizza cook will be near 500. I would also guess that heat transfer to the metal table will be greater then you anticipate.[p]The outside of the egg gets pretty darn hot when you are cooking pizza or steaks.[p]Doug

Just be sure you have the proper dimensions of the shelf and the table top height because of the spring lift assist that takes more clearance than previous models/plans. I would also consider making it a bit longer than 48"...mine is 44" and too short. I wrapped the top of my wood table with stainless steel....Guess a steel table couldn't be too much heavier than a green treated...lol
    Good luck

    Green Egg Apprentice,
I've had flames shooting out the bottom vent at much higher temps.[p]Mike

Smoked Signals,[p]I was swapping out the plate setter for the last stage of a rib cook and had run out of places to set things down (why are tables exactly 6" shorter then they need to be?). I have a rubbermaid plastic trash can off to the side where I had stacked a cool grate extension and some oven mits. I figured I could rest the plate setter on that temporarily while I dealt with the ribs...[p]Anyone know how to get melted plastic off a grate extension, oven mits and a plate setter?[p]RE
  • BigAL,[p]I haven't checked the new dimensions of the surface of the table and the shelf it sits on. What is it now with the new spring assisted hinge?
  • randomegger,[p]Try Acetone. Basically the same stuff that is in finger nail pollish remover. Home Depot or Lowes would carry a more potent Acetone. Take a rag, lay it on the area where the plastic is, pour the Acetone onto the rag and let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes and see if that helps loosen it up. This stuff is highly flamable, so stay away from any heat sources.
  • Green Egg Apprentice, deciding on the length of a table depends on a lot of things, how much space you have, etc. If you plan to keep it outside it is easier to keep it clean if you have a cover. BGE has table covers in lengths of 42 and 58 inches. You can make a cover, also. If you have room, I would go for the longer size, as you will be amazed at how much time you spend with your new egg. The table sounds neat. Casters work well and do not go flat.

  • Green Egg Apprentice,[p]If I ever make a new table, mine will be a lot higher. I want my grill surface to be just below chest level. So I don't get as much smoke in my head , don't have to lean over and for ease of flipping. Just my 1 cent.

    <p />Green Egg Apprentice,
Funny you mention this with all the wood tables that are posted here. BUTT......... I am in the process of having 2 tables built out of 1x2 steel bars and thick expanded metal. One table will be 6ft long by 30 inches to house 2 large eggs with a 12 x 20 inch marble board between the 2 eggs, the other will be 4 ft by 30 inches to house my small and a cadillac burner, the gas bottle will sit right under the burner. Someone once posted a pic of a small on a table that I am describing, thats where I got the idea.
The picture posted is one my cousin had built out of aluminum, this table is nice, no character but nice and is powder coated.

That is a link to the plan I used for my wood table. I see the new dimension on this web site is now 15". I have seen tables just leave that rear section open completely too. I would take some measurements assembled with lid closed and open and go from there. I would sure like to see a pic of the finished product.

  • That is a very good point!!! noted!

    Green Egg Apprentice,
Sounds like you know what you are doing, but I gotta tell ya, that name is just too long, kinda like a tongue twister. How about shortening it up to Green Eggprentice or how about just Eggprentice, yaa, I like that one.[p]Cheers,
