Wood left after 6 hours!

After I made baby backs for the first time, the next day I decided to see how the lump level was, I was surprised that there were still two pieces of wood left. One burned up but the other was mostly there. Should I have nestled the wood deeper into the lump? Instead of placing on top in a circle? I am just amazed on how little lump these eggs use for hours of cooking! I know I am not telling you guys anything you don't already know.

They are definitely lump misers. You might want to consider taking a hatchet and splitting your smoking chunks to smaller similarly sized pieces. I've found I get a better burn that way and I can replicate a cook easier with equal sized smoking chunks. They tend to burn all the way as well.

From your before and after pictures it appears your cook may have been more of a wood fire cook than a lump cook. You started out with very little lump and still have most of it left. How long did your cook last and how hot was it?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Was about 6 hours and I would say I averaged about 232°. Should I have filled the lump up to the top of the upper ring? Just under the plate setter slots?--

Your good how you had it. 12+ hours cooks you might need to fill up to the fire ringMN-Egger said:Was about 6 hours and I would say I averaged about 232°. Should I have filled the lump up to the top of the upper ring? Just under the plate setter slots?

If it tasted goo to you, then its OK. I like to mix the smoke wood INTO the lump so it burns accordingly as the lump fire spreads.
But, if you was good to you, then run with it!
And get that thing dirty with some brisket, ribs, boston butt so it doesn't looks so virginal!LBGE since 2014
