Bad run of XL's?

Well, I pulled the cover off of my XL a few weeks back to find the coating peeling everywhere on the top, and big chips on the inside.  I know this happens, and my replacement showed up today. Gave me a reason to finally assemble my MiniMax that has been sitting at the house since last fall.

I ran into my local Pool/spa store to have our water sampled, and they are a BGE dealer. When I walked in I noticed 5 XL tops stacked up with different names on them.  I asked and he pointed to the back where there were a few others. All where XL's except one.

Was there a bad run? Or is this an issue with the XL? Obviously BGE is great about sending replacements out, so no worries, but it is still a pain.

Just Curious.

First to hear of this being an issue. I have had my XL for many years with no issues.
    Thank you,

Do you know what year your XL is? Glad you received the replacement.

Stuff happens! Just like several years ago some new employee at the plant in Mexico drilled the hole for the dome thermometer straight down perpendicular to the plane of the dome's base instead of toward the center of the egg as we commonly know it. Not sure how many were sold, but there was no mass recall. If you ever saw one drilled the way those were you would immediately ask what happened! Talk about a dome temperature reading that was way off those were! I think that was the first time discussions were made about re-drilling fired ceramic and the chance for breakage.

You had an unassembled minimax since last fall? That is harder to believe.

I am glad you got a replacement

I'm about to install the third base on my XL. My first two developed large cracks.

I had that happen with my XL.  Two spots on the outside of the dome, and one on the inside.  It's a 2010-11.  Dealer swapped it out for me.  I get home and the new dome is broken in three pieces.  A month later, got another replacement.

Thanks for posting! BTW I assume you have learned to compensate for the off set temperature reading you get.(?)

Thanks for the input! I purchased my XL in 2012 and never had an issue until now. I was shocked when I saw the stack at the Pool store as well.  Picked up my replacement and will be fixing it tonight.

Yeah, I was rather lazy on assembling the MiniMax, but glad I had it to use while the XL was down n out.

Love the Forums here, and all of the great info!
