    GrillMeister,
If you figure 1/3 pound per person, that's about 35 pounds for pulled pork. If you figure 1 pound of pork will yield 1/2 pound of pulled pork, you'd need to start with about 70 pounds of meat. Finally, if you figure a butt weighs 7 to 8 pounds, that's 9 or 10 butts.[p]HTH

    Scottie,
But is that a 4lb butt or an 8lb butt....big difference. I think Ed is looking for raw weight. What are you cooking all this for Ed and am I invited?

Squeeze,[p]It's for someone's family reunion. They had my pulled pork sammich's from the concession stand where my donated efforts went to my daughters rowing club.[p]I'll ask them if they don't mind a big guy from Bama wearing a Grateful Pig BBQ Team T-Shirt stands in line for a sammich. :)

  • Squeeze,
Who would buy a 4 lb butt? Those are not a normal sized butt. That is one that is cut in half... So, my figures, which oif course is an approximate anyway is for the weight of a butt that comes in a case... Approximately 7-8 pounds...

Scottie,[p]I didn't know about 4lb butts either until my brother in law asked me to cook him some, and he was supposed to get two butts, and he brought 2 3.5 pound butts. They were a 7lb butt cut in half diagonally at kroger. [p]At least it wasn't in a solution, but it still was wierd. [p]Oddly enough, it was about as good as any PP I've ever cooked.

    Scottie,
When I was in AZ. all the butts I could find were about 4 to 5 lbs. Then someone on the forum mentioned as you just did that they had been cut, I had to ask at the meat counter for a whole one and they looked at me like I was nuts (which is probably true) then went to the back to see if they had any that had not been cut. I did get a 9 pound-er. From that point on there was no problem, I would walk in and say "whole butt"
The butcher calls out, that nut is here again, ha, got my butt though. [p]Cheers,

    Wardster,
The answer IS "C", but only if you're on a train heading south from Cincinnati at 49 miles per hour, and 3 men can make enough pulled pork for 83 people in 2.75 hours. <grin>[p]Ken

<p />GrillMeister,[p]If that is the only meat you are serving, I think I would just cook a case or about 75 pounds. This would get you to about 6oz per serving.[p]Dave

BlueSmoke,[p]I submit that 1/3 lb per person would produce a shortfall. I just did a Memorial Day soul food throwdown for about 125 people and planned for more like 3/4 lb of butt per person. Those portions just met the requirement, which equaled approx. 125 lbs pre-cooked. Dave's picture looks about right but I had two more cryovac butt's than the 5 he shows. Best of all the extra fed 6 people the following day[p]
