Is ok to cook on a cracked BGE

So I just got my new BGE base in. The question I have is can I keep cooking on the cracked one and just keep the new one in the box. Or should I iust change it out now. This is a picture of the crack when it's hot. Also the crack dosent go all the way through the egg.

Why risk a fire?  Should you have a failure during a cook that would be a mess.

@collins87 did BGE help out or did you have to pay full retail on the base?  You got kind of hung out to dry by a bad CL seller didn't you?

Yes, you can cook on it. Many here do, with the replacement sitting in the garage. Personally, I'd go until the crack was 50% up the sides.

Also "safe" is relative.  If your egg is on something that will not burn if some hot embers fell out you may be fine.  However you have a new base and it is now warranteed.  You might as well use it.

I'd keep cooking on it unless I was on a flammable surface like a wood deck.

I sure hope it's okay. Been doing it for a couple of years now. One of these days, I really should get my warranty replacement. Firebox is in pieces too.

My base has been cracked for over a year and I cook on it several times a week.  I have my replacement, just been too lazy to install it.

Short answer. NO I personally wouldn't risk the fire hazard especially if I had a brand new replacement.  But, I'm also on a deck so there ya go.

My replacement is in the garage.  I Egg on a stone patio.  I will go on until it fails, or I find a cheap dome so that I can add a Large to my collection.  :)

Many people cook on cement slabs or rocks.  I wouldn't risk it on a wood deck.  I would on a slab.

I should have mentioned, I also egg on a paved area. Would never use a cracked egg on a wooden deck. And after seeing pics and reading stories about grill fires, I would no longer use a brand new egg on a wooden deck. I used to. No more.

  • What is causing the cracks? Age or miss use? Just wondering I bought my XL the first of march and is this something I need to watch for and don't remember but how long is this warranted for

Ceramics crack. If you purchased it new from an authorized BGE dealer, it's warranted for life.

@DMW coolest flowerpot ever!  That must take some of the sting out of the swap hassle.

Man, change the base. What's the point of "saving" the new base for a later date. You got it to replace a cracked one, which could be a Hazzard. If you feel safe then so be it. I would change if if it were me.

    edited April 2015

I found out recently that my LBGE base was cracked. It had been taking a long time to cool down recently, and was thus burning more lump. My crack ran the diameter of the base and was starting up the sides. I wanted to change it out soon so I could stop wasting lump.

If your egg is not on a deck, and you're not having the problem I had, then I guess you could still cook with the cracked base in place. But as someone above asked already, why? If you have the new base, then go ahead and put it in.

If you ever had a fire and the insurance company found out you posted a question like this on line, you might be on the hook for it....
