Cooking steak tonight. Got egg to 750F. Put on daisy wheel to cool temp to 600F. Darn thing went to 200F. Coals were rolling
thermometer must be wacko. It jumped back to 500 but then fell again to 300F with all vents wide open. Flames shooting
i am going to get a new thermometer tomorrow. 2 years old. Could it be built up with creosol?

Yeah, I agree with @johnkitchens I'd at least clean it and test it in boiling water before giving up on it. If you put it in boiling water and can't twist the nut on the back of the thermometer to get you reading close to 212* for a consistent amount of time you probably need a new one.I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

I test mine in boiling, or close to it, water with my Thermapen. I have two larges, and I will test them both at the same time.

If you end up having to replace it, they sell a 3in green egg thermometer and calibrated just like the original small one, I bought one today.

I'm willing to bet when you were seeing 200* and then 300* you had actually wrapped the thermometer around and were running nuclear.They/Them

The Nice folks where I bought my egg told me that was possible. My neighbor wants to get a fan and try turning my XL into a help for his forging of iron. Not while I'm still alive.
