some PM come in as Notifications and some as postings to my "Wall"

I'm confused on this! I can easily reply to Notifications, but I am clueless on how to reply to "Wall" postings. What I do to get around MY SHORTCOMING is to just post a PM to the sender hoping they get it. Please tell me how to do it right!
