New table build planning - Accessory Storage
Tango2
Posts: 34
So I'm in the planning phase of building my egg table for my XL I've had for a couple years now. My main concern is future proofing the build. I have a handful of accessories now, but I'd like to make sure that my table will house all of my accessories safely. I currently have a plate setter, pizza stone and rib rack, plus the ash tool and ash shovel. If I can fit a bag of lump in a plastic bin as well as some smoking wood, that would be a plus. Have any of you guys done something similar? Are there any must-have accessories that I'm overlooking storage for?
My plans are to build a wooden frame with a concrete top. Never done the concrete counter top thing before, but with the price of concrete, I'm willing to give it a shot.
Thanks!

I've never done it but thinking of the same kind of project here.I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

I'll update the post as I make any progress on this project... Maybe you can learn from my mistakes!NoVA

I'm going to design it in 2 pieces. First piece will hold the GRILL and have space for a plate and hooks for BBQ tools. Mobility will be either a pair of wheels and a pair of casters, or 4 casters, 2 of which will 'lock'.
The 2nd piece will be simply STORAGE. no reason to drag ALL that stuff around ALL the time. The grill box will be taken to the grill, and after clean and setup, returned to its 'home'. Less clutter at the grill area.

"Are there any must-have accessories that I'm overlooking storage for?" Although not necessarily must-have, you may want to consider space for some of the following:
- drip pan
- spider and smaller grate (for steak searing)
- fire starting stuff (varies greatly on how you start your fire)
- Utensils (varies - I currently have hanging from hooks: tongs, spatula, grill brush, butane lighter, grate lifter, flashlight)
- temperature measuring and regulation devices
- things for raising grate (varies greatly from bricks, nuts and bolts, to adjustable rigs)
- the ceramic and dfmt top
- cedar planks or ceramic griddle for fish cooking
- roll of paper towels
- bottle opener
- mesh or perforated pan for small item cooking

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
I am thinking of building an outdoor island with storage out of concrete blocks or retaining wall stones. I would leave my XL in it's nest, but have an area for my new egg knock off. Here is a how I would set up the patio. I too am thinking of going with a concrete counter top and use cedar to create the storage are under the counter top. I will up load more ideas when I get a chance to draw them up. Island is the left with bar stools.

I would incorporate a drawer for the gadgets and such. I wouldn't`t put a towel bar in front of the egg, it will get in your way. A cement top sounds nice but it add weight to the unit making it harder to move around, pushing it through the yard.

I recently had a table built for my two large eggs. I need storage space for my wood chunks, platesetters, etc.
The guy that built my table is also building a storage cabinet/table for me. I am supposed to get it Saturday. I am limited by space so it only around 6 feet long. It will have 4 - 24" drawers and one small cabinet.
I plan on putting my platesetters, chunks, etc, in the drawers. The top is smooth so I can use it for placing pans etc. when I am cooking.
The back is going to have a place for me to store a TV. I will admit I am pretty excited about that part of the project.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's -
Quite a list of stuff by jtc. I hadn't thought of ALL that. I'm rethinking my mobile storage box plan with more stuff in mind and probably some drawers, to boot.

Lots of good ideas here. In my current situation, I would have no reason to move this table. That makes things a little less complicated.
I have power nearby, but incorporating things like lighting into this is an option as well. My main concern is storing my accessories, but now I'm starting to consider other things as well.
keep the ideas coming!NoVA -
