With bigger slots does this make for less use of small charcoal chunks?  How wide are the slots? Maybe I can give up the fan.

    They just fall to the bottom and burn im sure the difference is minimal.

    If you are a dump and light guy it might not make much of a change, if you sort your charcoal it makes a huge difference. I'm a dump and light person and I think it improved my airflow, but maybe not enough if you live somewhere that doesn't have much wind. I have a lot of wind in my environment so the fan has very rarely been even a consideration. 
    I raise my kids, cook and golf.  When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.
    Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.
