Darn.  Let me know how it works.   Mine is no longer airtight (burps smoke out the front) but I haven't wanted to mess with it yet because the hinge bolts bent (by design according to the manual) during assembly so I know once I take them off they'll need to be replaced.
Mine came assembled, but I thought only the band bolts are supposed to bend.  I would not expect bolts on the hinge to be bent.  Maybe I'm wrong.
My bad, I may have explained that wrong.  Yes, my band bolts are bent.  I think I have to take them off to loosen things thus I'd need to replace them.

I've futzed with adjusting my bands several times and haven't changed the bolts.  I know it goes against common sense, but then again, it seems to work.

  • My LGE is only six weeks old, but I've had the underbite caused by high temps multiple times. I've tried the adjusting the bands and the wrench-hinge trick each time, gotten the setting back to flush and scoring an A+ on the dollar bill test, only to see everything move again the next time I cook at high temps. I've raised this with the dealer who has spoken to BGE and they have offered to replace the bands under the warranty.

this is how you fix it.
    youtube description:
i found that my big green egg had an underbite (top lid a bit to the back)
after checking the hinge the only way to remove the underbite was too move the lower band as high as possible but still fully covering the clay
and the upper band as low as possible.
you can see the this the next video, altough the upper band is not straight, the idea behind it is very clear.
in the first part of the movie it;s propper alligned
in the second part i moved the dome lower (so the top band higher) and you see the misalligned directly popping up.. hope this helps someone else....

it will come back after you have very high temps, because metal will extend when it's hot
the best way to keep tention is to add spring between the bolt to keep the tension on the band when the metal extents with high temps

  • What is the wrench-hinge fix everyone speaks of.  I plan on re-aligning mine as well.

Wish an aftermarket company would come out with something. This is the single worst thing about the egg by far. I would just let it go, but everytime I do a pizza cook my lower band moves enough that the hinge rubs my table and I cant open the lid easily.
  • alligning with works with the first video
i love the the spring solution in the following video below
this way the tension stays if the metal extends, but if the metal extends (and shrinks) it will still move, but no so quick compared to when the tention is low when the metal bands are extented with high temp sessions.
