Always good to read some common sense. This guy nails it every time. Bet he has an egg. Anyway. Like I said its lengthy but good.

Go back to season one and watch the "Micro Algae Man" episode.  He goes to a charcoal plant in southern Missouri.  Good footage.  It was a pretty dumb idea to get into that hopper, good thing he didn't get hurt.  Unfortunately, that plant was purchased and subsequently closed about 5 yrs ago.......but that's where it all started for me about 10 yrs ago.

Good read, thanks for posting.  Mike Rowe is very talented guy--sings opera too!  He pretty much nails it in that without getting ugly.  I have a BS in Aeronautics and a MBA, but neither prepared me for real world nor entrepreneurship.  Both gave me a foundation of knowledge in accounting, law, etc., but not anywhere near everything.  For instance, I know enough about accounting to get everything very well organized and allocated in QuickBooks so my accountant has to do little work.  But for a $100,000 less in tuition, one could have an accountant handle everything, right?  MBA is a just that--business administration--you're smart enough to surround yourself with the best people in each specialty, knowing how each affects and interacts with the other.   Plenty of managers do the same without a degree since they have the experience.

Regardless of how people feel about what Scott Walker did for/to Wisconsin, you have to admire his fortitude.  I read his book about a year ago.  The guy had death threats to his family, put his political career on the line, and more to do what he said he would.  It would be a lot different country if there were more politicians like that on BOTH sides........if they stood up for their morals and stuck to their campaign promises rather than ALWAYS reverting to self preservation/advancement.

This was a good read @stlcharcoal I tried the college thing. It was more like I was forced into it. I have always been the type to use my hands to figure things out. I remember in high school adults telling me if I didn't of to college I was doomed and my future was hopeless. Turns out I'm doing just fine. I turned 40 last year and paid off my house (good feeling)! I'm not against college it just wasn't for me. In my job it can't be done without engineers, surveyors, and construction managers. The job also can't be done without skilled tradesman. We all have our place in the world but the notion that you won't succeed unless you go to school is foolish. I just wish I didn't have to hear so many belittle the ones that choose not to go to school.

  • I've known Mike for a while. Did some production work with him a while back. Really good guy!

Mike lives in San Francisco and has no room for a good grill, nor is he in town much to really enjoy a good one.  Now, get some BBQ in front of him and you've got a different story!
