refinishing Large Egg Handle

My wife doen't like the "distressed"  look of our one year old handle on our one year old egg.

I'd like to sand and varnish it with a marine varnish.  Any experience with grit, prep and varnish suggestions?

I'm not really all that handy.

    Not sure but others have used antlers, drift wood, etc.

    Also you can order one from Danny's carvings. He will customize it to something you and SWMBO like.
