BGE Plate Setter or Kamado Joe Heat Deflector?

Just bought myself a Large BGE and have purchased a plate setter but haven't pulled it out of the box yet. I have been doing some reading online and it looks like  there are some people who prefer to use the Kamado Joe heat deflector along with their divide and conquer grill grate because of the direct heat zones in the BGE plate setter.

Will the Kamado Joe heat deflector fit in a LGBGE? and does anyone have any thoughts or experience on using the Kamado Joe heat deflector instead of the plate setter?

if you can swing it take the plate setter back and get an adjustable rig, spider, and stone. you get raised direct cooking, indirect cooking, multiple level cooking, wok cooking, high temp searing down low......

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • I just recently picked up a Kamado Joe Divide & Conquer rig.   (I know, the BGE Police are coming to arrest me!!)

What I like about this unit is that the heat deflectors are actually round vs the triangle shape of the plate setter. The round stones eliminate hot zones that are typically found using the standard plate setter.

Also, the adjust-ability is phenomenal. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

And yes, they make one to fit the Large Egg.

If you remove the heat deflector can you bring down the grill grate?
  • I've also been told that BGE is redesigning the Plate Setter, but there is no telling what kind of time frame will be associated with that redesign.
  • dirty_denim86 Yes, definitely

I actually got the idea from your instragram saw the photo you uploaded of your setup.
  • I received my LBGE for Christmas and the BGE store was closed till January 5th so I had to improvise a heat deflector and I love it.  I purchased a Webber wire grate that fits on the plate setter ring and a 16" terra cotta planter plate.  I cover the plate in foil and place direct on the lower wire grate and it acts as a heat deflector and raise the cooking level in the BGE 2 inches.  The total cost was about $30.00 including a roll of heavy duty foil.  I have had great success using this set up for low and slow cooks. You can use the terra cotta plate as a drip pan or I like to place a shallow drip pan in the deflector plate. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

     Neither.........

If you want just a plate setter, get the cast iron one from Innovation by Chance.  It doubles as a griddle and you're never going to break it.

If you want something with more options from get a rig from Ceramic Grill Store.......they you have a pizza stone, wok setup, and has a ton of multi-level options.

  • I think the shipping to Canada might kill the Spider for me...I am leaning towards going with the Kamado Joe heat deflector and divide and conquer setup if I can find it locally.

Looks like most stock locally is all sold out of Kamado accessories until about late February.

Craig how does the baking setup look with the divide and conquer rack?
  • Thinking about getting the Adjustable Rig after all...

Wondering if there is any real difference between going with the round stone over the oval stone?

I know the oval is used primary for Ribs and Brisket but are there any benefits of having the round stone?
