Table material and protection

Hey guys
I am just starting to plan out my table for my large egg. Is cedar the best way to go? Can I do pine or is it as safe? I want it to last but if I can save a few bucks I would! I live in winnipeg Canada where it is dry and really cold in the winter and hot and humid in the summer . What sort of stain and sealant should I be using for these conditions? Or should I be using a cover ?
Any general info is appreciated.

Stainless steel. It may cost more but no maintainance or upkeep.

I used cedar and Douglass fur. As for stain I used min wax and then sealed it with minwax helmsman spar. It protects against uv Rays and weather.

Ya ok I think I'll stick to the cedar !

I live in Thunder Bay, and I made mine with cedar, turned out great!(plus shop smelled good for weeks!) then I used a marine grade spar varnish(4 coats)really brought out the grain and knot holes!!!

Western red cedar should last longer than eastern white

Wow daffy that table is amazing!!! Well done ! Thanks for the info! What did you do for the top of the table ? I have seen many people with boards glued and sanded to give an even finish and some just screw the boards side by side ....
