Blizzard, birthday and porterhouse

We had an odd dinner tonight. My wife had already made beef and vegetable soup. But on the way home from work I decided a blizzard and my birthday warranted a steak from the egg. Stopped at the store and picked up a porterhouse. So steak and beef veggie soup. :)

I used a little olive oil and Dizzy Dust regular. Did indirect at 300, then reverse seared on cast iron griddle - grill side. I had the griddle in the egg the while time to get it hot.

I need more practice with steaks. Most of it was medium to medium well. I also decided I needed a better thermoter. My old analog one starts at 130!

Egg had no problem getting hot. Buddies think I'm crazy grilling in the blizzard warning. image

Ok, odd pairing, but porterhouse is probably my favorite cut. Do yourself a favor and order a instant thermometer from thermoworks post haste! Nice cook.

Tell your wife you want a Thermopen for your birthday. It will take the meat temp in 2-3 seconds and at 600 degrees that's a nice feature. Happy Birthday! Nice cook.

I decided last night to bite the bullet and order a thermopen. Something about standing in the cold and dealing with a hot egg, combined with guessing on the temp for the steak :).

Also got the stick timer, which bumped me over $99 to get a free small infrared. Didn't get much for my birthday, so figured that will do nicely.

Excited for the new tool to come!

Besides the egg thermapen is most important thing I've ever bought with regards to cooking. In fact I could argue it's even more important then the egg. Very rare is a meal made that I don't use it.
