Flat side up?

A couple of questions guys. #1-Should the fire grate be flat side up? #2- on a cast iron grill, should the flat side be up as well? Rookie quiestions I know, but it's better to ask if you don't know.

On the cast iron grill, depends upon what you're cooking.  Use the wide flat side up when cooking things like fish or maybe loose homemade hamburger patties where you are concerned with a tendency for the meat to break and fall through grill.  Steaks, chicken pieces, roasts etc can go on the narrower side of the CI grill for small narrow grill marks on your food.

As for the fire grate, I've always used mine with the outer edge wedge matching the slope of the firebox.  I've heard that on the medium or the small some people invert theirs to prevent it from flipping when they try to stir their coals.  Not sure how or why that happens, just reporting on what I've read.

It's my understanding the flat side up, beveled side down. If beveled side is up, there's a greater chance of ash buildup.
I have read, like @Zmokin mentioned, the smaller sizes(Med. & Sm) will flip, resulting in many 4 letter words from the chef. YMMV
