Kick Ash Basket Owners - Questions

I received a Kick Ash Basket as a gift for Christmas and have a couple questions on it.

How much does the basket fluctuate temps? Do you notice a difference when dialing in temps?

I know this question will be based on the type of lump you use but how long has someone gone on a low and slow by just filling the basket with lump?

How do you like it? Would you buy it again?

Love it. Doesn't effect temps other than no more clogs. And yeah I plan one for the minimax soon.

@Jeremiah‌ I'm hoping it will save some time and clean up. It would be much more helpful for my smalls and mini. Those are a pain cleaning out!

  • It does save time cleaning the ashes, I like it a lot. Just did a Turkey low and slow and had charcoal left over for another cook.

Good to know! I wonder how a 12+ hour cook would do?

Just bought one for my large ... still in the back of the Jeep. Really looking forward to using it based on positive forum comments. @WeberWho? forgot to a ask two questions: 1) Do you do a special burn to get the manufacturing oil off the basket? 2) Are the new baskets being manufactured with thinner material? Thought some of the posted photos had thicker rod material.

I let mine burn off for a while before I put the meat in, because yeah it's mild steel and had plenty of oil on it.

Good idea, I've installed mine the day after my Xmas day Ham smoke.  so I haven't used it yet, but I noticed it was oily.  I'll have to remember to do a longer burn before I start cooking so as not to have machine oil flavored food.

To the OP: I've not noticed a change in dialing in temps.  I HAVE noticed no more temp fluctuations due to clogged grates/holes, and cleaning the beast is super-simple now.
Yes, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, and sure wish they'd make one for my Small too!

  • I've had one for a month and it may be my favorite aftermarket accessory.

I've noticed no change in dialing in temps or lump consumption..and this is transitioning from the Hi-Que. So much easier to clean, too.

  • What does the basket sit on? Does the basket replace the charcoal grid?
  • I wish there was one for the medium, or even the small.

I've watched a couple YouTube videos and they all used the Kick Ash Basket with the fire grate. So you can use it without the fire grate?

  • I wish they made a size for the small. That would be a great tailgate accessory because removing the hot coals allows for quicker cool down.

This. Taking out coals piece by piece was, uh, "exciting" and tedious when I tailgated.

Their web site says "temporarily out of stock", expect to ship January 14.

They told me it was my choice if I wanted to leave the OEM grate in or not.  It will work either way.  without the OEM grate, it will be more like using the High-Que grate

  • I notice zero difference when dialing in a temp. What I do notice is faster lighting and faster increase of temp on the initial start.

I see zero difference in quantity of coal between the standard fire bowl vs the KAB. The basket seems to fit the bowl pretty snug so the difference between w or w/o during a low and slow is insignificant.

Also, Chad from Kick Ash Basket and I have conversed several times on the dimensions of the Mini Max fire bowl. A Mini Max KAB will be on the horizon soon.

I don't own a MM, but I have to think based on other's comments, that will be a very welcome addition for those that like to travel with their MM and tailgate party.

All the reviews look good. My only concern is warrantee.
Why only 60 days? Gives the Appearance the company does not feel it will last very long.
If I missed some other details on the warrantee from the web site I'm sorry.
    Thank you,

  • I set mine on the charcoal grid, seems as if i can get it hotter a tad quicker if need be. But all else seems business as usual.

I have one for my large BGE. I removed the charcoal grid and just keep everything in the Kick Ash Basket. I haven't noticed any issues with the temp. It makes cleanup easy! I think this is a must have item.

It's made from standard mild steel. Just buy one for a large and cut/ reweld it. Any $100 mig welder will do it.

  • It's also nice if you cold smoke. I can just pull the coals out and it's ready to go. No more scooping/hand picking coals out to drop in the A-maze-n pellet smoker.
