Just checked the CGS store write-up. Tom says that the measurement from the felt line down to the top of the fire ring is approximately 4.25 inches for a standard setup. Is that what yours measures?
Yep...just measured it. 4.25 from the felt line to the top of the fire ring. So...am I okay?

  • You're fine. As long as you learn to cook on it, it doesn't really matter. You have the same set up as me. No issues here. If you want to go higher, you can buy aftermarket stuff, or get creative at the hardware store. Carriage bolts, angle pieces or fire bricks all work fine. My egg is full of bolts, copper tees and fire bricks when I really want to get high.

Looks like the base of the egg, the fire bowl, and the fire ring are good. Now measure the height of the plate setter ... outside max height. And, if we can get someone else to measure theirs ... where the grate is even with the felt line. While you're there ... how deep are the notches in the fire ring?

It's 4.25 to the top from the place setter bottom and about 1.5 from the legs to the top with the place setter "up side down" (legs up). The notches are about 3/4 inch.

    You're fine.

The chicken was excellent, neighbor just left after eating a bunch more, so I'm guessing it doesn't make much difference.

If I understand you correctly: placing the plate setter legs down on a flat surface and then measuring from the flat surface to the top of the plate setter will yield 3.5 inches. Yes?

That sounds about right. The Woo adds about 1/4 inch top and bottom, which raises the grate close to the felt line.

Can't speak for others, but my plate setter is generallyvout of the fire ring notches. That's why your grate looked so out of place in your pictures.

Again, I don't really know, as it's the way the dealer sold it to me. I'm too much of a newbie to know what is right and what isn't. I do agree, if I'm going to do pizza, then it would be nice if it comes to the felt line. But I'll use spacers if that is what it takes as putting the PS out of the notches won't raise it much (maybe 3/4 of an inch) as you mentioned.

Bill, it looks like there is nothing wrong with your equipment. Rotate the plate setter so that it is setting on the flats - not in the groves - and you'll be just short of the felt line.
