Large Egg Table from Cedar
GreenHam
Posts: 22
This is the table I built of cedar for my week old large egg. I used 4 x 4 post material for the legs, mortise and tenon, stainless steel deck screws toed in from underneath. Finished off with boiled linseed oil.

Welcome to the forum. Good looking table.

Tkanks to all for the kind feedback. Here it is with my EGG.

@GreenHam looks great! FWIW (and I don't think to many will disagree with this) the stone is great but, I would strongly suggest a table nest to get an air gap. Many folks with damaged tables simply due to heat transfer causing the table to begin smoldering and eventually catch fire. Just trying to help. Again nice looking table.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

Now let's see some food!
-
Thanks. I've been concerned about that. The clerk at the dealer said I didn't really need the table nest but I am unsure. I'm going to take a temp reading on it when I have it fired up for a few hours. I think the table nest could add a little stability as well.
-
@GreenHam search table fire or home fire and I'm certain the $$$ you spend on the nest will serve you well if nothing more than piece of mind.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

Great job on the table! Did you boil the linseed oil on the egg?

shtgunal3 not. LOL. I haven't cooked anything yet. Now I'm concerned with burning my new table!
-
ive been using my table just like you have yours set up for 2 months 3-5 times a week. I'm going to get a nest, but you can cook until you do. It's an overtime issue where the wood dries.

Mine has been that way for two years. You probably should get a table nest though.___________________________________

Better to be safe than lucky.

shtgunal3 said:Better to be safe than lucky. Absolutely.I plan on low and slow until I make a change to the set up. I have seen seen more table pics without table nests than with. Now I'm thinking of two layers of ceramic tile with an aluminum channel thermal break sandwiched between. Since aluminum melts at 1200 F that should be safe.

an air gap is what you're looking for. should be fine. my point is, don't not cook, it's unlikely you'll have a problem on the first cook.I'm not trying to minimize what Husker is saying, and I really am going to get some sort of air gap.

Eggcellent table. First and foremost as you begin this new adventure, don't forget the pagan rituals required with any new union between egg and table, not the least of which is kissing the very ground they sit on before the first light. From there, how else you mark the occasion is probably best left a private affair.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.
-
A double shot of single malt and a hand rolled Dominican would work
-
Oh, God, yeah! A ritual I strongly endorse.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

I started off with that type of setup in my table (and LBGE) and I have a charred spot on the bottom shelf directly under the egg. I recommend you make an air gap.
The table - I'm impressed - mortise and tenon construction - that's the best technique. I think you're not going to get UV protection from linseed oil, consider a spar finish.

Thanks for the insight from your experience. My grill will be in the shade most of the time and I don't think I will mind having to reapply the oil yearly.
-
You should be fine then without the sun turning the wood grey. Here's my table:

That table is eggsceptional! I like the look of pecky. Great craftsmanship. I'm sure you have a lot of other woodwork to be proud of.
-
Thanks! I love making stuff. I have a house full of wood desks, tables, consoles, etc. I like to use recycled wood, most everything cypress, but a few exceptions.

It looks like we used the same casters. Mine are a set that are designed for a Kobalt rolling tool chest that Lowes stocks for 19.95. Since I used cedar I thought more rigidity was needed for mounting. This is what I came up with

First cook. Looks like brisket but it is the choice cuts from the top of two Chucks. 200 F for 3 hrstheyolksonyou said:an air gap is what you're looking for. should be fine. my point is, don't not cook, it's unlikely you'll have a problem on the first cook.
