Cracked

I recently noticed that my fire ring was cracked... I took this picture as verification and got a prompt replacement from my dealer/Big Green Egg.  I've got a GREAT dealer.


When looking at the picture later, I noticed that the crack occurred almost directly above the seam fire box.

I suspect that fire box seam is working like a chimney that is focusing extremely hot gases in a very concentrated area.  I don't remember reading in the instructions about this and when I went to pick up my replacement fire ring at my dealer, I checked all of their display units and there was no consistent placement of the fire ring vis-a-vis the fire box seam....  BUT I've decide that in the future I will make sure the seam/chimney is under one of the cut-out areas of the fire ring. ..of course that's putting the hot spot under a narrower part of the fire ring but my thinking is that the cut-out space might be enough to cause the gases to defuse somewhat.


I don't know if my observation / fix is a valid concern or not but I thought I'd pass it along.  I figure it can't hurt...

Not sure of your idea... But either way it's nice to have the awesome warranty and great to have a really good dealer

Hmm...I've had a cracked firering as well, and like your experience my dealer handled it no questions asked. I never considered positioning a firering cutout about the fire box split. I have always positioned the firebox so the bottom opening lined up with the vent door for airflow and ash cleaning. I have positioned the firering so the plate setter notches line up so the plate setter can sit in an upside down "Y" position with one of the legs toward the hinge. This is on an XL. 

And now I just created a great set of run on sentences with no point whatsoever. I blame Deschutes Brewery for the above and will now stop typing.
