I called a local dealer, who called their distributor and called me back.
They have no roll-out info yet here; no pricing info.
I may still give up and jump on the KJ jr.

I'll be using my bag of Carbon del Sur this Friday to smoke a butt for my mom's 70th bday.

6hrs only half used lump? hmmmmmmm usually i have very very little to spare in the KJ but setup is different and also BigGayCraig BigGreenCraig may be just a wizard.....good job and nice write up.... I wish i could get more out of the kj jr....

the carbon del Sur lump is a more dense slow burning lump atleast the bag I got. If you fill the KJ Jr you could get 12 hours at 250 or pretty close atleast.
  • i like my rock wood but damn.....i guess some brands excel at certain things better than others. like burn time vs foreign objects and smell

There are several lumps that will burn much longer than Rockwood. Fogo, wicked good, the carbon del Sur are all much more dense solid pieces. If you put a 20lb bag of wicked good next to a 20 lb bag of Rockwood you can visibly see that the wicked good bag looks like you got shorted but its just more dense.

Just to add to what you are saying so no one gets confused......

20# of charcoal should burn for the same duration as anothe 20# of charcoal REGARDLESS of density, provided they have the same carbon content.

The volume is the difference.  So if you can squeeze 12-13 lbs or very dense charcoal into your firebox vs. only 10 lbs of another brand, then YES it will last longer.
