One of my Stoker temp probes had been acting funny with wild temp swing ... upon closer inspection it was longer than the other identical probe, aha, turned out the wire imbedded in the probe was loose and moving in and out ...
I pushed it all the way in and gently made two criss-crossing crimps, problem solved.

Was this on the pit temp probe or a food probe. The only issue I had was a while back I had the lid open and the pit probe wire got melted when it went nuclear. I had to replace it 8-} TOTALLY my fault. Other than that no issues.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

It's a food probe but technically you can interchange pit and food temp probes because a blower can be assigned to food probe too, of course it won't be easy to insert a pit probe into a butt! Not trying to simplify it but based on visuals I think the 'intelligence' (device MAC address, LED and what not) is in the plug, the probe is just the end of the type K thermocouple wires? I'm cheap (cost of new Stoker probe plus crazy $hipping to GWN), if I melt my wire I would try to splice it back (assuming there is pair of wires inside) or get one of these and splice to extend the length (bonus).http://www.amazon.com/Probe-Thermocouple-Sensor-Temperature-Controller/dp/B00899A4LY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1415376530&sr=8-3&keywords=thermocouple+probeedit: take what I say with a grain of salt, this is coming from a guy who advised @yzzi to bypass his fridge's defrost timer">canuckland

another interesting observation:when alarm type of any probe (pit or food) is set to 'food' you can only set target temp;when alarm type = 'fire', it asks for hi and lo temp settings too, makes sense.canuckland
