thermapen question

I just received my new Thermapen yesterday.  It looks easy to use,  but just want to know if anyone here has any special tips?  Thanks in advance..

Make sure to measure temp in the middle- if prob gets too close to bottom edge of the meat it will read higher. I go in from the side for burgers and other thinner cuts of meat

Be careful when taking an oral temperature...the point is sharp. :D

I turn the 10ths reading off so I don't sit there watching it jump around. Enjoy it! It was one of my best purchases for cooking.

  • More important, DON'T use as a rectal thermomitor.

    +1 on this.
  • It has auto shut off so if you leave it open, it will shut down after a few minutes - that's nice nice, but if you leave it open on the table and then quickly want to take a temperature, you have to close and re-open it.

My advice, Close it after you take a temperature - every time. Then when yo need it, you just pop it open and are ready. I know it only takes a couple seconds to close and open, but it is nice to have it at the ready every time you need it.

Also - Avoid washing it in the sink if you can. Water is not it's friend. Wipe it off with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol if you can. Othewise a wet sponge and wipe down is all it needs.
